I went to my local store

The other day

To buy some life.

But they don’t sell it any more.

Or so they say.

I don’t need a whole life, I told them.

Whatever scraps you have will do.

Give me a month –

Well, a month or two.

You’re what!

You’re out of months!

Right then, I’ll have a week.

You surely can’t be out of weeks.

You are!

Make it a day, then, one lousy day!

A day is the least I’ll take.

And I’m not leaving without it.

In fact I’ll take a few

While I’m about it.

No days!

Not a single bloody day!

This cannot be true!

But it was.

It was true.

They promised to see

What they could do.

Come back in a week, they said.

Fat lot of good that was to me.

Next week I could be dead.
