The Next One

It takes a long time

To climb this high,

Day after day,

Year after year.

It takes a lifetime

To reach the sky.

And when you get here

The wind blows cold,

The sky is clear,

And the seagulls cry

That the end is near

In the by and by.

Up on the cliff top,

Perched on a life edge,

Watching the rocks

Fall into the sea,

You wait and you wonder.

Will the next one be me?
